William Stacey Farmer, better known as “Bill” and even more affectionately known as “The Train Man” age 88 of Creston passed away on Monday, March 16, 2026 at Margate Health and Rehab. He was born on May 23, 1937 in Ashe County, North Carolina to the late Elmer D. and Dora Pennington Farmer. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Frances Jane Powers Farmer, one sister, Geraldine Gibson, and four brothers, Charlie Farmer, Ervin Farmer, Carlton “Ned” Farmer and Elmer “June” Farmer.
Bill was a graduate of Riverview High School, where he formed lifelong friendships and memories that stayed with him throughout the years. He had a deep appreciation for hobbies that brought both challenge and satisfaction, most notably his love for trains. Bill was an avid collector and enthusiast, and his passion came to life in a truly special way—he built a train that ran around his home. It was something that brought him great joy and left a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of seeing it.
Bill was also a proud and devoted grandfather. His grandsons were the center of his world, and he took great pride in each of them. One grandson in particular, David Farmer, who serves with the West Jefferson Police Department. Through David, Bill became well-known and warmly regarded by the many officers who served alongside him, a testament to the kind of man he was and the legacy he built through his family.
Mr. Farmer is survived by one son, Mike Farmer of Creston, one daughter, Deborah Ann Lollis and husband, Steve of Easley, South Carolina, one sister, Margaret Pearl Johnson of Creston and one brother, Joseph Paul Farmer of West Jefferson. Also surviving are four grandsons, David Farmer (Ariel), Timothy Denny (Selina), Chris Farmer (Kayla) and Stephen Denny, as well as seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, March 20, 2026 at 4:00pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Russell Hart and Rev. Alvin Day. Burial will follow in the May Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 4:00pm one hour prior to the service.
Memorials may be made to the family in care of Ashelawn Memorial Chapel; 3470 US Highway 221 N. Jefferson, NC 28640.
