Ward George Vannoy, a man whose hands could fix anything and whose heart held room for everyone, passed away peacefully at his home in Jefferson on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the age of 90. Born in Ashe County to the late Wiley Andrew and Mary Ann Dillard Vannoy. In addition to his parents, Ward was preceded in death by his sister, Audrey Severt, and his brothers, Billy Howard Vannoy, Wade Thomas Vannoy and son, Ronald Keith Vannoy.

He was a devoted family man, sharing 70 remarkable years of marriage with his beloved wife, Barbara Ann Lyall Vannoy. Ward dedicated over 40 years of service to Sprague Electric before retiring, but his hands rarely stopped moving. He had the art of piddling down to an absolute science. A gifted tinkerer who could breathe life back into any broken piece of machinery, Ward lived by the steadfast motto, "You never know when you would need it," making sure he never threw a useful part away.

The outdoors was his true sanctuary. Ward found profound joy in simply riding his tractor, mowing the grass, and taking in the fresh air. A longtime and faithful member of Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church, he embodied a quiet grace, always eager to lend a hand or give whatever he had to someone in need. Family gatherings were the highlight of his life—especially when a good cake was on the table. To his community, he was a pillar of kindness. He was a remarkably good neighbor who held a special place in his heart for his "little neighbors," Ruby and Willow, who cherished their regular visits to eat cookies.

His legacy of love and tinkering lives on through his wife, Barbara; his daughter, Pam Hudler and her husband Bobby of Midland, Texas; and his brother, Russell Vannoy and his wife Ann of West Jefferson, sister in-law, Dorothy Vannoy of Jefferson. He was a proud grandfather to Emily Hudler of Burleson, Texas, and Kelly Ann Carroll and her husband William of Midland, Texas, great-grandfather to Kingston and Ellington Carroll. He also leaves behind several cherished nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at 3:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel, officiated by Rev. Paul Strickland, with burial following in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church Fellowship Hall Air Conditioning Fund (PO Box 65, Jefferson, NC 28640) or to Medi Home Hospice (PO Box 421, Jefferson, NC 28640).
