Wade Elbert
Simmons
June 25, 1948 – April 18, 2026
Wade Elbert Simmons, age 77, of Purlear passed away Saturday, April 18, 2026 at Ridge Valley Center in Wilkesboro. Mr. Simmons was born on June 25, 1948 in Surry County to Hillery Dallas Simmons and Mamie Mae Draughn Simmons. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ruby Killen Simmons, a sister, Rosa Lee, and a brother, Henry Simmons.
In loving memory, we honor a man whose faith guided every step of his life. After the passing of his beloved Ruby, he spoke of her often, as well as of his enduring love for the Lord who sustained him.
A devoted disciple of Christ, he faithfully served his church family—studying, teaching, and pouring into others. He was especially known for his kindness toward children, earning the affectionate title of “the Candy Man” each Sunday as he greeted them with small treats, a warm smile, and a Santa-like presence.
A proud veteran of the United States military who served during the Vietnam War, he traveled the world aboard a warship as a skilled cook—a gift he continued to share generously with family and community throughout his life.
Even after his final stroke, his greatest desire remained to return to reading the Bible, striving to complete it for the fifth year in a row. All of this stood as a testament to the faith that defined him and the love he carried for his Lord, his country, and his beloved Ruby.
Mr. Simmons is survived by: one stepson, Rick Sturgill of Crumpler; one brother, Alfred Simmons of Mount Airy; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 24, 2026 at 11:00 am at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel with Pastor Tim McCann and Preacher Stan Hostetter officiating. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with military rites.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Friday, one hour prior to the funeral services.
