Telmadge Starrett
Shepherd
October 17, 1944 – April 5, 2026
Telmadge Starrett Shepherd, age 81 of West Jefferson passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2026 at his home. He was born in Ashe County, North Carolina on October 17, 1944 to the late Vance Henry and Lois Allen Shepherd.
Telmadge proudly served his country in the United States Army, where he developed a strong sense of discipline and duty that would guide him throughout his life. Not only did he have a passion for cars, but his life-long career first developed from his military occupation as a truck driver. Following his military service, he continued his commitment to protecting others working for a short time as a police officer in El Paso, Texas. Because of his love for cars Telmadge also tried his hand at stock car racing on dirt tracks. The life training and experiences he gained through those roles shaped the man he became.
Driving wasn’t something Telmadge had to learn—it was something that came naturally to him. His years as a truck driver not only took him across countless miles, but also gave him the opportunity to stay connected with those he cared about—he was always mindful of friends and loved ones who lived along his routes, often making time to visit whenever he was nearby. Anyone that knew him knows how much he loved good country music.
Mr. Shepherd is survived by one son, Stacy Shepherd (Andrea) of Arizona, two daughters, Jamie Mintz (Josh) of Pennsylvania and Nicole Vargas (Rene) of Arizona, two brothers, David Shepherd of New Mexico and Danny Stalfort of Maryland. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Tillman Mintz, Cecily Mintz, Valorie Vargas, Victoria Vargas and Croix Shepherd as well as one niece and two nephews.
In accordance with his wishes, no formal or public services will be held.
