Roger Childers, age 86, of Jefferson passed away Saturday, September 26, 2026 at Atrium-High Point following a brief illness.

Roger was born April 24, 1940, in Ashe County to the late Arthur and Rosa Childers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Delmer Childers and two sisters Hazel Yated and Joesphine Bledsoe.

Roger was a member of Bald Mountain Baptist Church, where he served on the building committee. He was a dedicated worker with a great work ethic, spending over three and a half decades with the Vannoy family across both Builder's Mart and Vannoy Construction.

When he wasn't keeping busy on the job, he clearly knew how to enjoy his downtime—taking pride in a freshly mowed lawn and cheering on two college sports powerhouses with Tar Heel basketball and Crimson Tide football.

Roger is survived by his wife of 66 years, Barbara Parsons Childers of the home; a daughter, Nancy Shoemaker and husband, Larry of Statesville; a son, Tom and wife Kelly of Indian Trail; three grandchildren, Sarah Shoemaker Brame and husband, Phillip, of Winston-Salem, Colby Childers of Indian Trail and Victoria Shoemaker of Statesville; two great granddaughters, Eloise Kate and Lara Ruth Brame. He is also survived by two sisters, Eva Miller of Bradenton, FL and Betty Norris and husband, Ronnie, of Todd; a brother, James Childers and wife Janet of Charleston, SC; a sister-in-law, Alma Childers, of Bradenton, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2026 at 2:00pm at Ashelawn Chapel with Rev. John Elledge, Speakers David Stanley and Nancy Shoemaker. Burial will follow in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

The family will receive friends following the graveside services at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in the Community Room.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Bald Mountain Baptist Church Ministry Center, 1435 Bald Mountain Road, West Jefferson, NC 28694.

Pallbearers are as follows: David Stanley, Denise Pennington, Wesley Hicks, Kris Little, Jim Jenkins and Larry Hash; honorary pallbearer is John Miller.

The family would like to thank the staff doctors and nurses of Ashe Memorial Hospital, Atrium-Wilkes and Atrium-High Point for their loving care.
