Mildred Louise Greene Harless, better known as “Peggy” age 88, of West Jefferson passed away Sunday, March 15, 2026 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. She was born on May 7, 1937 in Caldwell County, North Carolina to the late Hardy McDonald and Mildred Perkins Greene. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Rayborne M. Harless and one sister, Sally Ann Farmer.
Peggy worked for many years at United Chemi-Con and later retired from Sara Lee Knit Products, where she was known for her dedication and strong work ethic. Outside of her career, Peggy found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved sewing, tending to her garden, and canning the fruits of her labor to share with family and friends.
Faith played a central role in Peggy’s life. She was a faithful and active member of Friendly Grove Baptist Church, where she served as the church clerk for more than 30 years. Through her years of service, Peggy was known for her reliability, kindness, and the deep love she had for her church family.
Peggy will be remembered for her caring spirit, her devotion to her faith, and the many ways she quietly served others. Her life was a blessing to all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and church community.
Mrs. Harless is survived by one son, Dwight Harless, one daughter, Roberta Harless and one sister, Linda Hahn Rash all of West Jefferson. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Michelle Severt and husband, Marcus of Lansing and Nathalie Williams and husband, Tyler of Granite Falls as well as one great-granddaughter on the way, several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 at 1:00pm at Friendly Grove Baptist Church by Rev. Herbert McCoy and Rev. Jeff Rizoti. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday. March 17, 2026 from 6:00 to 8:00pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.
