Michael Anthony Hartzog, age 62, of West Jefferson, passed away on Tuesday, October 27, 2026 at Forsyth Medical Center.
Born on April 29, 1964, in Jefferson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Phillip Hartzog and Beulah Goodman Jones and his brother, Phillip Hartzog.
Michael’s life was defined by a deep and abiding desire to serve others. A man of unwavering faith, he loved nothing more than attending church and sharing the love of God with his community. He faithfully served as the pastor of Obids Country Church. Driven by his passion for faith-based outreach, Michael founded and directed Ashe Harvest Ministries in 2022, turning his lifelong goal of helping his neighbors into a beautiful reality.
When he wasn’t serving his community, Michael found great joy in working with his hands. He was a talented woodworker and crafter, but his greatest treasure in life was his family. His favorite moments were simply those spent surrounded by his beloved "grandbabies."
He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Powers Hartzog; three sons, Matt Hartzog (Heather) of Crumpler, Jason Hartzog of West Jefferson, and Brandon Grant of West Jefferson; and two daughters, Hannah Hartzog (Ricky), Emily Hartzog, both of West Jefferson, his special mother in-law, Shirley Powers. He also leaves behind two brothers, Ricky Hartzog (Norma) of Lansing, and David Hartzog (Byron) of Asheville; two sisters, Dianne Shumate (Harold) of Crumpler, and Debbie Osborne of Sparta. His memory will be cherished by his six beloved grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services to celebrate Michael’s life will be held on Monday, November 2, 2026 at 1:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel, officiated by Brother Bim Coldiron. Burial will follow in the Obids Country Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the chapel.
Because community outreach was so deeply important to him, the family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to his cherished organization: Ashe Harvest Ministries, 7376 NC 16 South, Jefferson, NC.
