n Loving Memory of Lois “Jan” J. Welch March 22, 1944 – March 20, 2026
Lois J. Welch, lovingly known as “Jan” to her friends, was born on March 22, 1944, in Ashe County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Minnie Ellen Smiley and Joseph Vaughn Welch of Lansing, North Carolina—a heritage she carried with pride throughout her life. She passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026, just two days shy of her 82nd birthday.
Jan was a devoted mother to her children, Sean and Tammy Welch, and her love for them was the foundation of her life. She cherished not only her immediate family, but also her extended family and close friends, holding each relationship close to her heart. Her life was centered around the people she loved most.
Earlier this year, Jan experienced the profound loss of her daughter, Tammy—a loss that brought her deep sorrow. Even through that pain, she remained a testament to enduring love, carrying her daughter in her heart each day.
She is lovingly remembered by her son, Sean, and her grandchildren, Ian, Dusty, and Michelle, who carry forward her legacy of love, strength, and devotion to family.
In her younger years, Jan was an outstanding basketball player at Lansing High School, a reflection of her determination, talent, and competitive spirit—qualities that stayed with her throughout her life.
Jan found joy in life’s simple and meaningful moments. She was a passionate reader, always finding comfort and inspiration in books. She enjoyed playing card games with friends and family, where laughter and connection were always present. She was also a fantastic cook, known for bringing people together around the table. Family and friends eagerly looked forward to her specialty dishes, especially her Thanksgiving dressing, baked Alaska, and her famous red velvet cake.
She was always the life of family Christmas celebrations, bringing joy and laughter as she played Santa and handed out gifts—a tradition that will be cherished and remembered by all who were fortunate enough to share in those moments.
More than anything, she loved following the lives of her grandchildren, taking pride in their journeys and celebrating their accomplishments.
Jan was a woman of quiet strength, kindness, and unwavering care. She had a gift for making others feel welcome and supported, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Her legacy is one of deep and enduring love—felt in the lives of her family, her friends, and all those she touched.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
