James “Jamie” McCoy, age 36 of Sparta passed away on Friday, May 22, 2026. He was born on May 6, 1990 in Ashe County, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Richard Tuney and Minnie Belle McCoy as well as an uncle, Mark Pennington.
Jamie was a man who felt most at home in the great outdoors, whether he was deep in the woods hunting, casting a line into a quiet stream, or relaxing around a campfire. The outdoors was not just a hobby to him — it was where he found peace, purpose, and joy.
Jamie had a special passion for sharing his love of the outdoors with young people through “KOZ” – Kid’s Outdoor Zone. He treasured the opportunity to mentor children, teaching them about nature and survival skills, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
Above all else, Jamie loved his girls. Spending time with them brought him his greatest happiness, and he treasured every moment they shared together.
Mr. McCoy is survived by his daughters, Autumn McCoy and Amber McCoy of Sparta, his mother, Melissa Pennington Miller (Ken) of Lansing, his father, Jeff “Mater” McCoy of Lansing, his brother, Jordan McCoy of VA, his grandparents, Larry “Boot” and Rita Pennington of Whitetop, VA, a special step-son, Hunter Griffin, nieces and nephews, Paisley Phipps, Blake McCoy and Madeline McCoy, aunts and uncles, Mendy Lewis (Randy), Jimmy McCoy (Belinda), Sandra McCoy, Richard “Flatrock” McCoy (Teresa), Marvin McCoy (Debra), Keith McCoy and Michael McCoy.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2026 at 7:00pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Brian Walls and Minister David Lyalls.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6:00pm to 7:00pm one hour prior to the service.
Graveside Service will take place on Friday, May 29, 2026 at 11:00am at the Perry Cemetery in Lansing.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family in care of Ashelawn Memorial Chapel and Gardens; 3470 US Highway 221 N. Jefferson, NC 28640.
Jamie will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his servant’s heart, and the love he gave so freely to his family and friends. His presence will be deeply missed, but the memories he created will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
