Charles Howard Brewer, better known as “Howard”, age 77 of Creston, passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2026 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mr. Brewer was born in Ashe County, North Carolina on June 22, 1949 to the late Charles Spencer and Hettie Vanover Brewer. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Arvil Brewer and Joe Brewer as well as a sister, Ruby Grogan.
Howard will be remembered as a hardworking, caring man. He cut timber and sawmilled most of his life also working on the farm from daylight till dark. Though he never had children of his own he helped raise his nephew, Gene Brewer Jr. (whom he called “Bud”). To Howard, Gene Jr. was the son he never had. He was more than just an uncle he was more of a second father to Gene Jr. they shared a special bond right up to his passing. Howard touched everyone he met and his memories will still live on in the hearts of those he shared his life with.
Mr. Brewer is survived by his nephew and caregiver, Gene Brewer Jr. of Crumpler, two brothers, Gene Brewer Sr. (Anne) of Creston and Paul Brewer (Rose) of Warrensville, two special nieces, Madison Brewer and Harley Hodges as well as several other nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026 at 2:00pm at Three Top Baptist Church by Rev. Frankie Rash. Fulfilling Mr. Brewer’s wishes his nephew, Gene will be placing him in the Brewer Family Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of food or flowers memorials may be made to the family in care of Ashelawn Memorial Chapel & Gardens; 3470 US Highway 221 N. Jefferson, NC 28640.
