Obituary

Elizabeth Lane Morrison of West Jefferson, NC, peacefully passed away at home on July 22, 2026 at the age of 85.

Beth was born in Poughkeepsie, NY, on January 2, 1941, the fourth child and only daughter of Richard T. and Anna B. Lane. She grew up in Kingwood Park, playing amidst the fireflies on the lawn with her brothers, cousins and friends and accompanying her mother tending the beautiful family garden.

Along with her brothers, Beth attended Westtown School, where she made lifelong friends and nurtured her Quaker faith. She then attended Goucher College to pursue a degree in English, graduating in the summer of 1962. After college, Beth worked as a technical writer for the IRS office in Baltimore, MD and later for IBM in various locations up and down the eastern seaboard.

Beth met her first husband, Fred L. Ramsey in Baltimore, MD, in 1964. Beth and Fred were married on her family’s lawn at Kingwood Park on July 2, 1966. Beth and Fred then moved to Corvallis, Oregon where they had two children, Matthew and Alexander Ramsey.

In 1975, Beth moved to Atlanta, GA, to join her second husband, Vaughn W. Morrison and his children, Vaughn K., Jill and Jennifer. Beth and Vaughn shared a love of birdwatching and made many trips together in search of interesting birds in interesting places.

Throughout the next several decades, Beth and Vaughn moved as work often required, living in Wappingers Falls, NY; Cary, NC; St. Petersburg, FL; Todd, NC; Sandy Spring, MD, and West Jefferson, NC. In West Jefferson, Beth shared her energy and passion through civic engagement. A remembrance from one of her many friends tells the story:

Beth's community activity and involvement was widespread. She and Vaughn were active in the Todd Community Preservation Organization when they first moved to Ashe County. Beth was part of the Main Street Small Town's Program that helped revitalize Todd. Beth was a strong proponent of the arts and she was active with the Ashe County Arts Council and many of its programs and events including the On the Same Page Literary Festival. She was a founding member of that Committee and her grant writing talents helped to shape it into a top-notch event that is still going strong today. Beth was a member of the Ashe Choral Society and a supporter of the Ed Perzel Chamber Music Society. The Ashe County Public Library and the Friends of the Library held a special place in Beth's heart and she always was in attendance at those events.

Beth will be remembered for her smile! When she saw you, her smile lit up the room; you always felt that Beth was looking only at you when you were in a group setting. Kind, gracious, loving, caring... We'll miss Beth and we'll miss those wonderful Rosemary Shortbread Cookies she made every year for hospitality at the Literary Festival! Rest in Peace ...

Beth is survived by her husband, Vaughn W. Morrison, her children, Matthew Ramsey and Alexander Ramsey, her step children, Vaughn K. Morrison, Jill Anderson and Jennifer Morrison, her brother, Peter Lane, her nephews, a niece, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be missed dearly by all her extended family and by the many friends she cherished throughout her long life.
