Betty Jo Lewis Jenkins, age 91 of Jefferson passed away on Monday, September 14, 2026. She was born in Ashe County, North Carolina on February 18, 1935 to the late Robert Frank and Laura Jean Welch Lewis. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by one sister, Naomi Greene.
In a remarkable testament to their lifelong love and devotion to one another, Betty Jo and Ed Jenkins, passed away on the same day, only minutes apart, reunited in eternity as they had shared their lives together. It is comforting to know that they were reunited once again and now rest together in the presence of their Lord.
Faith was an important part of Betty’s life. Orion Baptist Church was her home church where she was actively involved and cherished the fellowship she shared with her church family. She especially enjoyed helping prepare and serve church meals. Her willingness to serve was a reflection of her caring and giving spirit.
Outside of church, Betty found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved gardening and took pride in watching things grow from the seeds she planted. She also enjoyed canning, preserving the fruits and vegetables from her garden and sharing the abundance with those she loved. These were more than hobbies—they were a reflection of her hardworking nature.
Mrs. Jenkins is survived by one daughter, Jennifer Jenkins of Statesville as well as her sister-in-law, Melba Phillips (Dwight) of Wilkesboro and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral Services for both Betty and Ed will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2026 at 3:00pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Lawrence Goodman and Rev. Johnny Sloan. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
The family respectfully requests no food please, in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Orion Baptist Church Building Fund; PO Box 1345, Jefferson, NC 28640.
Those who knew her will remember her for her faithful heart, her willingness to help, and the warmth she shared with those around her. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and church family, but her life of faith and service will continue to be remembered and cherished.
