Mrs. Bernice Houck Prestwood, age 72, of Jefferson, passed away Saturday evening, May 23, 2026, at Margate Health & Rehab Center.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jeremy Houck officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, one hour prior to the service.

Mrs. Prestwood was born in Ashe County on December 12, 1953, to the late Everette Wayne Houck and Eva Carrie Trivett Houck. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Levon Swicegood; and four brothers, Rex Houck, Arliss Houck, Rev. H.D. Houck, and Jerry Houck.

 Bernice worked for over 27 years at Sara Lee Knit Products before later serving as the Town Manager of Lansing for 10 years. While her health permitted, she attended Phoenix Baptist Church. She was stubborn in the most beautiful way, full of strength, determination, humor, and love. Bernice had a gift for making those around her laugh and brought joy to family and friends wherever she went. She will be remembered for her strong spirit, caring heart, and the lasting impact she made on everyone who knew her. 

She is survived by her daughter, Shannon Olive (Chuck) of Crumpler; two sisters, Barbara Sheets (Frank) of Jefferson and Kathy Crepps of Laurel Springs; three brothers, Michael Houck (Susan) of Fleetwood, David Houck (Susan) of Fleetwood, and Don Houck (Barbara Jean) of West Jefferson; two grandsons, Seth Scott and Sid Scott; along with several nieces and nephews.
